    Description

    The Chatham Islands, part of New Zealand, form an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean about 500 miles east of the South Island. The archipelago consists of about ten islands within an approximate 37 mile radius, the largest of which are Chatham Island and Pitt Island.
    The weka is a flightless bird species of the rail family. It is endemic to New Zealand. Four subspecies are recognized but only two are supported by genetic evidence. Weka are sturdy brown birds, about the size of a chicken. As omnivores, they feed mainly on invertebrates and fruit.
