This musical theatre sensation centres on Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers. This is an extraordinary story. A penniless orphan in the Caribbean, he travelled to New York and became George Washington’s right-hand man during the War of Independence, and an influential writer and politician.
There was also plenty of drama in his personal life. Hamilton married Eliza, had a close relationship with her sister Angelica, and was caught up in a sex scandal. He also fought in several duels, argued with his fellow politicians, and had a lifelong rivalry with Aaron Burr, the show’s narrator.
Lin-Manuel Miranda’s ingenious choice was to tell this story via a hip-hop score, drawing a parallel between Hamilton and contemporary rappers. He also cast actors of colour as the revolutionaries. It makes this historical musical feel electrifyingly modern, bold and radical – a revolution in theatre too.
You can find seats for the London production of Hamilton on Telegraph Tickets. This is a beautifully crafted production, so it’s hugely enjoyable both from the stalls and with a view from higher up. Check Telegraph Tickets for the latest prices.
Lin-Manuel Miranda himself starred in the Broadway production of Hamilton, which made all its leads into household names. However we’ve since seen plenty of exciting talent come through, especially brilliant actors of colour.

The show is directed by Thomas Kail, who won one of the musical’s astonishing 11 Tony Awards. Miranda also won the Pulitzer Prize, and the cast album won a Grammy Award. The London production added a further seven Oliviers.

“In a show that’s as revolutionary in form as it is in subject, history is made to feel risky, uncertain and fresh: young people fumbling their way towards freedom… There is simply nothing like being in the room where it happens.” Read the full Telegraph review.
